Nuestros alumnos experimentan

el “hygge” en Dinamarca

Viaje a

Dinamarca

Our students experience “hygge” in Denmark

In Denmark, the term “hygge” is given to describe a feeling of coziness or well-being. It is uniquely Danish and difficult to exactly define in Spanish or English. During their recent trip to Denmark, our 1st Bachiller students were able to experience “hygge” first hand while making new friends and enjoying this Danish hospitality.

The students arrived from Spain to Billund, Denmark, famous for the emblematic Legoland theme park. We were received by the Danish students with posters and banners welcoming us to Jutland,  the low-lying peninsula in western Denmark which separates the North and Baltic seas and borders Germany to the south. Following our arrival, we had lunch and a tour of the host school Vejen Gymnasium. There students began getting to know their Danish companions who would be their host for the entire week all while doing their best to communicate in Spanish and English.

The school experience and facilities impressed our students from the start. The school has a very open concept layout. Classes last 65 min but usually students can move about freely to do group or individual work in the many common areas of the school. Most work is done on laptops and there is an emphasis on practical and active learning. Following their host student’s timetable, our students attended classes such as Religion, Maths, German, French, English, Biology and, of course, Spanish.

Probably the most curious event was the school’s Friday Cafe in which students gathered after school in the common area for a social party in which parents sold alcoholic beverages and students played games and listened to music. It was a true example of the freedom the Danes give to their children in return for responsible behaviour.

Over the weekend, students really got to know what it’s like to live as a teenager in Denmark. Families invited their Spanish students to different trips including Legoland and a professional football match in Copenhagen. Trying out new foods, including Christmas dinner, and adjusting to different timetables, they spent time with families and attended celebrations so that they could experience the “hygge” that is so singular to Danish society.

The organisation of activities by Tina Maria Blomkvist, the Spanish teacher and a former student from Los Naranjos, was fantastic. Apart from attending school and living with the families, we enjoyed a potluck Danish dinner together at the school, Zumba class, a visit to Koldinghus Castile in Kolding and an outing to the cinema. All of these social events helped to strengthen the bond between the Spanish and Danish students and a good time was had by all.

Following almost a year of contact via skype and social media, this is the first part of the Spanish/Danish exchange. The Danish students will be coming to Spain in September and it will our turn to show them what it’s like to live and study in Spain, and specifically Gandía. We hope that this experience of learning continues to enrich all the students and teachers involved and that it is the start of many long lasting friendships.
