We loved creating our own mountainous scene and then making the paper volcano erupt, spilling lava all over the place. This was a hugely fun activity.
We used cardboard and paper to make the base and the shape of the volcano. Then we coloured it with paint to give an awesome look to our creation. We placed a bottle containing water and bicarbonate of soda in the middle of the volcano. We just needed one more ingredient to make the volcano erupt: white vinegar!
The science behind the eruption: when you add vinegar to bicarbonate of soda a chemical reaction occurs. This is an unstable substance that instantly separates into a gas and a liquid, producing carbon dioxide and water. This safe chemical reaction works perfectly to make such a realistic volcano eruption.
