Show and Tell.

This term in primary the English Department has been having lot ́s of fun with our students and the new activity Show and Tell. The children are really motivated by having the chance to bring something from home and explain why it is special to them. There has been a wide range of different objects arriving on the Show and Tell days.

Show and Tell has numerous benefits for young children. These early language experiences help to build effective communication and listening skills that are essential for a young child’s learning. It also encourages emotional development in a child, as he or she shares their interests, home lives, and joys and struggles with peers. In addition, this socially rewarding experience helps to solidify important home-school connections. When students are motivated second language learning becomes much easier.
Speaking in front of a group is an effective activity to encourage the use of descriptive language and develops a child’s ability to retell stories – in turn leading to improved communication skills which are important throughout their lives. They also develop the ability to answer questions well.

Being part of a show and tell audience is also an important part of learning. Most importantly, the audience learns to sit still and listen closely to someone other than their teacher, and to be be respectful.

As a result, they learn to consider their own ideas, think of questions about the topic and raise their hand to ask their question in a well mannered way. This isn’t something all children feel comfortable doing but given enough opportunities, they will learn that all questions are good questions and nothing bad happens if you ask a question or share your ideas.
