Sparking a passion for reading from a young age is so important for a child’s development, and it’s fun!
Children instinctively love books and stories as they are introduced to wonderful ideas, places, and creatures they haven’t before encountered. Through stories children are able to learn more about life, the world, and themselves.
Cultural understanding:
Telling stories allows children to experience different worlds, countries, and traditions. It can help develop an appreciation of the rest of the world and different cultures.
Storytelling has been proven to help develop a sense of empathy as children are encouraged to put themselves in the position of the story’s protagonist; to consider their actions and reactions and why they may have made them.
Reading is the perfect way to broaden their vocabulary, as a child will pick up new words as they hear them. If they don’t understand a word, they will more than likely ask for an explanation, so always encourage this kind of questioning.
Storytelling also encourages children to be creative and use their imagination to picture the setting, the characters, and the story as it unfolds. Rather than being given the imagery to accompany the words, which is the case when watching a film, the child is able to build the world within which the story is set for themselves.
Focus and social skills:
Through storytelling children are encouraged to listen to others, whether it be the storyteller or others listening to the story. They learn to be more patient and to let others speak; they begin to understand that others may not interpret things in the same way they do.
This Friday 23rd of April is World book day and the children in pre school have been celebrating during the whole week.
We have been working with the classic children’s book The Very Hurngry Caterpillar with various activities.
You might remember Eric Carle’s classic children’s book from your own childhood! Carle creates his artwork using a collage technique, in which he cuts and layers hand-painted papers to form bright and cheerful images. The predictable language of the text encourages children to chime in and read along. The Very Hungry Caterpillar also teaches readers about the days of the week, counting, nutrition, and the life cycle of a butterfly.
On Friday the children we’re surprised by a shadow theatre representation of the story “ A taste of the moon”
It tells the story of a group of animals who are curious about the taste of the moon. Will it be sweet or salty?The first to try to catch a piece of the moon is the turtle, but she immediately realizes that
she cannot reach it alone so she asks the elephant and the other animals for help, by working together the animals reach their goal.
A continuation we had a fun “flavor tasting workshop” where the children got to taste different flavors and talk about what they thought the moon tasted off!
Following that we made bookmarks to remember this special fun day and animal masks to play with.

Hemos estado trabajando con el clásico libro infantil The Very Hurngry Caterpillar con varias actividades.
¡Quizás recuerde el clásico libro infantil de Eric Carle de su propia infancia! Carle crea su obra de arte utilizando una técnica de collage, en la que corta y coloca capas de papeles pintados a mano para formar imágenes brillantes y alegres. El lenguaje predecible del texto anima a los niños a intervenir y leer. La oruga muy hambrienta también enseña a los lectores sobre los días de la semana, el conteo, la nutrición y el ciclo de vida de una mariposa.
El viernes sorprendimos a los niños con una representación teatral de sombras del cuento “El sabor de la luna”
Cuenta la historia de un grupo de animales que sienten curiosidad por el sabor de la luna. ¿Será dulce o salada? La primera en intentar atrapar un trozo de luna es la tortuga, pero de inmediato se da cuenta de que ella no puede alcanzarla sola, así que pide ayuda al elefante y a los otros animales, trabajando juntos los animales alcanzan su objetivo.
A continuación, tuvimos un divertido “taller de degustación de sabores” donde los niños pudieron probar diferentes sabores y hablar sobre lo que pensaban que había probado la luna.
Después de eso, hicimos marcadores para recordar este día especial de diversión y máscaras de animales para jugar.
